AprepitantAprepitant (brand name Emend®) is an antiemetic medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting, particularly that caused by chemotherapy or surgery. As a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, it blocks the action of Substance P in the brain, a key neurotransmitter that triggers the vomiting reflex. Primary medical usesAprepitant is used preventively, not to treat nausea and vomiting after it has already started.
- Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV): Aprepitant is used in combination with other antiemetics, such as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and a corticosteroid (like dexamethasone), to prevent both the acute and delayed phases of nausea and vomiting from moderately and highly emetogenic chemotherapy.
- Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV): It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting that can occur after surgery.
